Reinstalling Email Address on an iPhone

You may find that your email account on your phone stops working. This can be frustrating, but can often be fixed by reinstalling the email address.

If your email account is not working on one device, but it works on other devices, the fix often involves deleting the account on the device where it is not working, and then reinstalling the email address.

Generally, email is set up so that it does not actually reside on any of your devices, but rather it is stored in the cloud at the email provider and you can view it from any device that is logged in.

This means your Gmail is being stored on Google’s computers and your Comcast email is being stored on Comcast’s computers.

You will know if this is the case by looking at your email on more than one device (e.g. your computer and your phone). If the email you can see are the same, including any stored in folders, then nothing will be lost by deleting an account and reinstalling it. (If in doubt, come in to SDM and we can help you figure that out.)

**IMPORTANT: Before you begin, make sure you have the password for your email account. To be sure, open a web browser and log in to your email account.**

Step 1 – Find the email accounts on your iPhone

On your iPhone, tap on the Settings app.

Scroll down to Accounts & Passwords and click.

This phone has three accounts, iCloud, Gmail and

Each account listed under the ACCOUNTS heading will indicate whether it is set up for Mail or not. In this example, only is set up to receive email. Click on the account name (in this case, the account).

This is the main email account screen for the email address, and it displays information about this account. Here you see that it is set up to receive email, but not for synching of contacts, calendars or notes.

Side Note: if you think this account might have unusual settings, perhaps it is a corporate account, you may want to look at the current settings before you delete the account, so that you can replicate them when you add the account back in.  To do this, tap on the Account name >.

In this case we can see that is set up as a type of Gmail account. We will use that information when add this account back onto the phone.

Tap on the SMTP line to see information about the server used to send email.

Tap <Account to return to the email screen, and then tap on Advanced to see additional settings for this account.

Scroll down for more.

Step 2 – Delete the email account

Go back to the main email account screen (by clicking on the <Account in the upper left corner).

Tap on Delete Account at the bottom of the screen.

Step 3 – Reinstalling email address

Tap on <Accounts in the upper left corner of the screen to return to this listing of account (which will no longer contain the account in question).

Tap on Add Account and you will be presented with several different popular types of email accounts.

Most of these choices describe email addresses that end in the words listed.

For example, and iCloud account ends in, a Yahoo account ends The Exchange account, and other are the exception to this rule. Exchange is another kind of Microsoft email account, and other is any other email address, such as or for example will be other.

Tap on the type of email account that you are going to add. In this case, our email is a kind of Google account. When you click on Google, you are presented with a sign in screen. Type your email address and click NEXT.

Then type your password and click NEXT

The following screen will show you what kinds of information this account can be used for. Green means use this account for this information, and Grey means do not use this account for this information.

In this case we would turn off Calendars and then click Save.

Now click on the home button to return to your Mail app and see if your email is arriving appropriately.  Good luck!
