How to Use Malwarebytes

Malwarebytes is a reputable and frequently downloaded Malware/Virus scanner that offers a free 14 day trial.

Here at SDM we recommend using it whenever a machine is suspected to have a virus.

This post describes how to download and install Malwarebytes, how to run a scan, and what to do when files get quarantined.

How to Download and Install

In order to use the scanner we must first download it from their website.

Click on the free download button in the top right.

The program should download automatically. Be sure it is the right version for your specific OS.

Once downloaded, run and install the program. It will give you the option to use or skip the browser guard, but unless the service is paid for it will expire and no longer be useful.

Browser Guard

Mac Users will change their Privacy & Security settings and allow “Full Disc Access” to the application.

How to run a Scan

Malwarebytes is constantly updating their database on malware and viruses to detect when scanning.

Though nothing can be perfect, the database is extensive enough to catch most problems.

Once downloaded the interface will give a clear and easy option to run a scan.

Simply press on it and allow it some time to go through the computer’s files.

The scan may take longer depending on the computer’s hardware and how many files it has.

If anything is detected it will add it to the window on the bottom left of the program.

If all is well, and there is no threat, the scan will show 0 detections.

Quarantine

If there is a detection, Malware or any PUPS (Potentially Unwanted Programs) will be placed into a “Quarantine.”

The Quarantine exists on the left side of the homepage.

Here the files will be placed in a protected space in which the user can comb through them and determine if they see anything that is suspect.

It will also show a file path to see where the file is located.

Use the box at the top left to select all, and choose quarantine, and delete.

There are situations where false positives can be detected, as well as some things that aren’t too harmful.

If unsure if a program is bad, doing some research on it can help.

If there are specific ones to keep, that have been falsely detected, choose individually before quarantining and deleting it.

Tips to Avoid Malware and Viruses

The best thing one can do to keep their computer clean is to learn how to identify and avoid it from the start.

Not downloading programs one is unsure of is a good practice.

Avoiding sketchy websites and not clicking links in sketchy emails is wise.

For novices, having anti virus software can also be helpful.

It is also important not to allow people onto a computer through a remote program.

Major tech companies will never call asking for access to a computer or for personal information.
