Learning how to rename your PC is very beneficial when using Windows 11 devices, and any form of device tracking.
A lot of people don’t know the name of their devices. It is often a random code or something set by the manufacturer.
In this post you will learn where you can change this in the settings, and why it is beneficial to you to do so.
What is the device name useful for?
First, when the device is added to an account for tracking, you will clearly be able to identify which device is which. This is especially helpful when you have multiple devices.
For example, below are devices added to a Microsoft Account. This can also display serial number and location information.

These identifiers are also helpful with other things such as network management, file sharing, and identifying the correct device when using remote access tools.
Do not confuse the name of the User on the computer with the name of the device. These are two very separate things.
How to Find and Change the Name
The easiest method is to simply open settings and choose the “Rename” option at the top of the home tab.

It’s also found on the path of Settings>System>About.
Both of these areas will also show the current name of your PC.
The goal is to be identifiable but not too personal, so don’t use any sensitive data as the name.

Once you’ve renamed the device, hit next. You will then be asked whether you want to restart the device now, or later, to save the name change. Once the device restarts, you will have changed the name!
