Zoom is a well known application that can be used for video lessons. Now, we would like you to learn how to attend an SDM Lesson using GoTo. We also have a YouTube video of the steps.
There are two ways to join a GoTo lesson. The first is to download the GoTo app, open it, and enter the meeting code and password (if there is one).
The second and more common for our lessons, is to click on the link in an email and join the lesson in a browser. Follow the instructions below.
Being Invited to an SDM Lesson using GoTo
If you are registered to attend an SDM Lesson using GoTo, you will receive an email that will look like this. It will have a phone number in case you want to call in with audio only.
By clicking on the blue link, you will go directly into the meeting site.
Why the Chrome Browser
Neither Zoom nor GoTo work in the Safari browser. If you are Macintosh user, and Safari is your default browser, then you can copy the link in the email and paste it into the address bar in the Chrome browser.
Also like in Zoom, you can choose to use the GoTo application instead of attending the meeting in the browser directly. Instructions are here.
To Join the Lesson with SDM using GoTo
The opening window for the lesson looks like this. On the left, you can type in the name you would like other attendees to see. Then click on the blue arrow.
Underneath your picture, you will see the current settings for the camera, microphone and speaker. If you have more than one option for any of these, you should choose the correct one here.
Scroll down to enter the password if one was given in the email, and then Join Meeting as Guest.
This will bring you into the meeting.
In this meeting, one attendee is on the left, and an attendee with their video blocked is on the right.
To mute your microphone click on the blue microphone at the bottom of the window.
To turn off your video, click on the icon of the blue video camera at the bottom of the window.
Screen Sharing
When another attendee shares their screen with you, it will display on your screen and the other attendee’s images will get smaller.
If you want to share your screen with the other attendees, you will click on the icon at the bottom of the window that is a monitor with a slash through it.
This will give you multiple sharing options:
- Whole desktop allows you to switch between windows and apps to show various activities
- Application window will allow you to switch between tabs in the browser, or between text documents, while keeping the rest of your desktop hidden
- A single Chrome tab keeps the rest of your desktop hidden, and can be used when you only want to show what is in one tab in the browser
Click on the appropriate choice and then on the word Share.
Exit a lesson
To exit the lesson, click on the icon of the red phone handset. If the teacher leaves the lesson before you, they will exit the meeting for everyone.
