Getting Started
Go to openai.com in any browser to get started on your computer.
You can also download the official ChatGPT app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Be sure to verify that the publisher is OpenAI before installing.

When downloading ChatGPT or any app, you’ll want to check that the app in question is the correct one according to the publisher.
If you search for ChatGPT in the App Store or Google Play Store, you may see several similar-looking apps. The official ChatGPT app is published by OpenAI. Sometimes the official app appears more than once because one listing is a sponsored advertisement and another is the standard listing.
You may also see many other AI apps in the search results. Some use OpenAI’s technology, while others use different AI systems entirely.
Many third-party AI apps are sometimes called wrappers. These applications use another company’s AI technology while adding their own interface, features, or specialized tools.
While these apps aren’t inherently bad, they may:
- Cost more than ChatGPT
- Offer different features
- Require separate subscriptions
- Include additional restrictions or guardrails
Before downloading any AI app, it’s a good idea to verify:
- The publisher’s name
- User reviews
- Subscription costs
- Privacy information

Once you’ve opened the website or the app, you’ll be greeted with the option to log in or sign up. The first time, select Sign Up and enter your email and password. If you already have an account, log in with your credentials. iCloud or Gmail accounts can be linked to ChatGPT to sign in that way as well.

How do I Use ChatGPT?
Using ChatGPT is straightforward. Open the app and you’ll see a text box at the bottom of the screen. Here, you can type your question or request. For example, one could ask, “What’s an easy dinner recipe?” or “Can you help me write a thank-you note?” After pressing send, ChatGPT will provide an answer or suggestion almost instantly. You can ask follow-up questions or clarify your request if needed. For instance, if you asked for a dinner recipe, you can add, “What ingredients will I need for that?” ChatGPT will adjust its response based on your input.
Everyday Uses for ChatGPT
You might be wondering, “What do I need an AI assistant for?” The truth is, the possibilities are endless. You can ask for help with simple code, create artwork, or even get a new recipe.
An easy and practical way to use ChatGPT is for cooking inspiration. For example, I asked for a simple chicken piccata recipe, a classic Italian-American dish with plenty of variations. ChatGPT provided a traditional version, complete with ingredients and step-by-step instructions. From there, I could customize it further—asking it to scale the servings up or down, adjust for dietary restrictions, or even suggest ingredient substitutions based on what I had in my fridge.
Of course, it’s always a good idea to cross-reference recipes with a trusted source, but for quick meal planning, ingredient ideas, or even full recipe breakdowns, ChatGPT is a breeze to use.
Using ChatGPT to Refine a Result
ChatGPT can work with text, images, documents, and voice conversations. One popular use is generating and editing images. For example, I’d like a new Facebook portrait. I’ve input my employee profile picture (consent for the use of images is important!) and asked ChatGPT to create an image of myself in an “8-bit Video game style, shaved head, mutton chops, late 1980s video game portrait” as a style guide. This is the result.
Then the AI will render the image, based on your prompt. As a new feature, images can now be refined. Previously, this was impossible, as each image was generated all at once.
While I liked my first 8-bit portrait, it lacks a certain cyberpunk-bladerunner-esque flair. Let’s fix that!
“Now take the previous image, ensuring all elements remain the same while applying a more purple-blue city nightscape color palette. Apply an older Cathode Ray Tube TV effect to create the vintage blur”.
And as simple as that, I’ve managed to create a new Facebook Portrait according to my specifications.
Other Creative Uses for ChatGPT
Beyond recipes, ChatGPT can help with a range of creative and practical tasks. Here are just a few:
Art & Design Inspiration – Need a concept for a digital painting, a retro-futuristic poster idea, a logo, or even color palette suggestions? ChatGPT can help you brainstorm and refine your vision.
Writing Assistance – From blog posts to poetry to short stories, ChatGPT can generate outlines, help with writer’s block, and even mimic different styles.
Music & Lyrics – Whether you’re composing a song or looking for chord progressions, ChatGPT can provide ideas and even generate lyrics.
Examples
Let’s say we want to learn how to play “Boys Don’t Cry” by the Cure.
I asked for chord progressions and guitar tablature—the finger positions on the fretboard—to help me learn “Boys Don’t Cry” by The Cure. At first, it only provided the chords and key, along with suggestions on where to find accurate tablature.
I can also ask it to draw the tabs out explicitly as well!
Gaming & Storytelling – Need help creating a D&D campaign, fleshing out character backstories, or generating sci-fi world-building ideas? ChatGPT can be your creative partner.
For example, I will try rolling up a standard DND character according to fifth-edition rules. I’ll go with a half-elf warlock, whose patron is “the Great Old Ones”.
ChatGPT can generate a complete character sheet, backstory, equipment list, and portrait based on the parameters you provide.
Now I have a fully made Level 3 character to work with, with minimal fuss, ready for a game.
Tips for Success
When chatting with ChatGPT, try to be specific in your requests. Clear questions or instructions make it easier for the app to understand and provide the best answers. If you prefer, you can use the microphone feature to speak your questions instead of typing them. You can also use parentheses to (Emphasize) a quality or [brackets to de-emphasize] a quality.
