If you’ve ever looked at your phone and wondered what that little arrow or set of connected dots does, you’re not alone. That symbol is the Share icon, and it’s one of the most useful buttons on your device.
Once you know what it does, you’ll start noticing it everywhere, and using it all the time!
Transcript: Tech Symbols Explained – The Share Icon
The Share icon, that little arrow or set of connected dots, lets you send content to another app or person. You’ll see it on photos, articles, and videos. Tap it to copy a link, text it to a friend, or post it somewhere else. In short, Share means you’re passing something along, not sending it privately, but sharing it out.
What Is the Share Icon?

The Share icon lets you send content from one place to another.
You’ll usually see it as:
- An arrow pointing upward or outward
- Three dots connected by lines
- A box with an arrow coming out of it
No matter the design, the meaning is the same: this lets you pass something along.
Where You’ll See It
The Share icon appears in lots of apps and websites, including: photos on your phone, news articles and blog posts, videos, social media posts, and maps and locations
Any time you might want to show something to someone else, or save it somewhere, the Share icon is usually nearby.
What Happens When You Tap Share?
When you tap the Share icon, a menu opens with different options for sending or saving the content.
Depending on your device, you might be able to:
- Text the link to a friend
- Send it through email
- Post it on social media
- Copy the link
- Save it to notes or files
- Open it in another app
Think of it like handing something to someone else: digitally.
Share vs Send: What’s the Difference?
People sometimes confuse the Share with Send, but they work a little differently.
Send is usually used when you’re already in a messaging app or email. It sends a message directly to someone. For more information head over to our blog post, The Send Icon: The Tiny Arrow That Connects You to the World.
Share, on the other hand, gives you choices. It lets you decide how and where to pass the content along.
In simple terms:
- Send = deliver a message
- Share = pass content to another place or person
Why the Share Icon Is So Useful
The Share icon makes it incredibly easy to move information between apps and people.
You might use it to:
- Send a recipe to a friend
- Share a funny video in a group chat
- Save an article to read later
- Send directions to someone meeting you somewhere
Instead of copying and pasting everything manually, the Share button does the work for you.
The Simple Way to Remember It
If you see the Share icon, just think:
“This lets me pass this along.”
Not necessarily privately, not necessarily immediately, but somewhere else.
And once you start noticing it, you’ll realize it’s one of the most powerful buttons on your phone!
